Coal Shortage in India: Amit Shah meets power, coal minister | India Business News

NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah met power minister RK Singh and coal minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday to discuss the coal situation in the country amid reports of shortage.
According to news agency ANI, officials from National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), power and coal ministry are also present in the meeting.
According to reports, over half of India’s 135 coal-fired power plants, which in total supply around 70 per cent of electricity, have fuel stocks of less than three days.
Energy supplies are under strain globally as prices surge and demand and supply chains are strained by the recovery of consumption following lockdowns to contain the pandemic.
Power consumption of 3,900 MU on October 8 was the highest this month so far (from October 1 to 9), which also became cause of concern among the ongoing coal shortage crisis in the country.
On Saturday, Tata Power arm Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (DDL) which operates in North and Northwest Delhi, had sent phone messages to its consumers saying, “Due to limited coal availability in generation plants across the north, power supply scenario between 2-6 pm is at critical level. Kindly use electricity judiciously. Be a responsible citizen. Inconvenience caused is regretted – Tata Power-DDL.”
However, the coal ministry has assured that sufficient dry-fuel is available in the country to meet the demand of electricity generating plants and stressed that any fear of disruption in power supply is “entirely misplaced”.
Most of NTPC’s plants in Delhi are running at 55 per cent capacity as their coal stocks are enough for one-two days.
Consequently, the NTPC has halved power supply to the city from the usual 4000 MW, Delhi power minister Satyendar Jain said.
Punjab is also facing major power cuts.
Jharkhand, Bihar and Rajasthan were among the worst affected, an analysis of daily load despatch data from central grid regulator POSOCO showed.
